Documents for Braine, Notre-Dame [Saint-Yved]

1177, February 15

In papal bull first mention of the site of the church

LOCUM IPSUM, IN QUO PREFATA ECCLESIA SITA EST, CUM OMNIBUS PERTINENTIIS SUIS; CAPELLANIAM DOMINI BRANE;...

This place, in which the aforementioned church is located, with all that pertains to it; the chaplain of the lord at Braine;...

As there is no archaeological evidence for an earlier church on this site, foundations would have been laid about this time. The bull suggests that up to then the canons had used the chapel in the castle. See Caviness, "St.Yved of Braine…", pp. 524-548.

1189

Large gift for commemorative masses for the bishop of Reims, Henri who had died in 1175.

Caviness, "St Yved of Braine…", pg. 539, suggests, on the argument that the bells had to be placed in the western upper stories, that this indicates the church was essentially complete at this time.

This is in the commentary of the GC 1751, not the Instrumenta. Caviness, "St. Yved of Braine…", pp. 535-536, has reservations on the relevance of this date.
