Lindisfarne Gospels

After the crusaders returned Notre-Dame d’Etampes was transformed into a centre of mystical exploration. The way to God was exemplified in a sightline inside the church from the Ascension over the south entry to window to His Glory in the north. The popular yearning for mystical union with the divine was swept away after the Second Crusade by an increasingly authoritarian church. Yet, the stones whisper still.

As power shifted, so did faith. What one king cherished, his successor deemed heretical. After only 70 years, Notre-Dame's glory was brutally suppressed. A new king deemed the church's mystical path dangerous. Its unique beauty was silenced, the Glory window sealed, sightlines erased, and Notre-Dame became a shell of its former self. Why the brutal reversal? Why the violent resistance from the congregation? Why suppress its mystical ambitions? What were the secrets? We unravel the story of a church silenced but not forgotten, a faith broken and the story buried.
